Research & advice

  • 2018-present: Member to the Advisory Group of the Sexual & Gender-Based Violence as International Crimes Timeline: A Timeline and Resource Database for Practitioners and Academics Studying SGBV as International Crimes (set up by Berkeley School of Law).
  • 2017: Expert research on labour exploitation (group dynamics) and raising awareness through information (about worker’s rights for new comers in the Netherlands)
  • 2015-present: Acting as Expert Consultant, Sexual Crimes in Conflict Database (International Nuremberg Principles Academy).
  • 2015-present: Taking part as International Expert on Sexual Violence under International Criminal Law to amicus curiae briefs on conflict-related sexual violence in high profile international cases (e.g. the Hissene Habré case (Senegal); the Sepur Zarco case (Guatemala)).
  • 2016: OCSE Consultancy detailing government obligations and measures to address trafficking for labour exploitation in supply chains, including through public procurement and transparency.
  • 2015-2016: Writing of expert report and giving testimony as an expert witness on victim/witness protection/interference issues for the Special Tribunal of Lebanon (in the cases STL-14-05 and STL-14-06).
  • 2015: Expert research Trafficking in Human Beings (domestic work in the Netherlands) for European University Institute (Italy).
  • 2013-2014: Independent report of first monitoring period GRETA (Council of Europe).
  • 2013-present: Acting as Expert Commentator to the International Protocol on the Documentation and Investigation of Sexual Violence in Conflict, 1st and 2nd edition (UK’s Foreign and Common Wealth Office, Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative).
  • 2013-present: Contributing to EC projects on (conflict-related) sexual violence and human trafficking.
  • 2010-present: Co-supervising PhD research on topics related to international criminal law, international criminal tribunals and conflict-related sexual violence.
  • 2006-present: Reviewing of manuscripts (books, PhD theses and articles) on conflict-related sexual violence, international criminal law and international tribunals.
  • 2001-present: Authoring many books, articles and reports on international criminal law, victims’ rights, international tribunals, conflict-related sexual violence and human trafficking.

Training & capacity building

  • 2017: Training of Ugandan judges, prosecutors, defence lawyers, victim representatives and civil society about prosecuting CRSV (International Crimes Division, High Court, Uganda).
  • 2016-2017: Moderator of the ACP-EU Dialogue on Migration and Development – Seminar on Trafficking in Human Beings and Smuggling of Migrants of 22-23 november 2016, drafting concept note and final report.
  • 2009-2013: Organizing a series of colloquia/conferences in The Hague (the Netherlands) and in Kigali and Nyanza (Rwanda) on conflict-related sexual violence, victimology, criminology, and research methods of international crimes, including for capacity building purposes.
  • 2008-present: Training on conflict-related sexual violence, international criminal law and victims’ rights for Chinese judges (Grotius Center, Leiden University; Institute of Social Studies); Dutch judges, prosecutors and lawyers (District Court of The Hague: International crimes division); and judges, prosecutors, defence lawyers, victims’ representatives and civil society (International Crimes Division, High Court, Uganda).
  • 2000-present: Speaker/trainer for a variety of actors and audiences (e.g. academics, UN, government, international tribunals/courts, (legal) practitioners, NGOs) on CRSV and human trafficking, including in Kosovo, South-Africa, South Korea, Rwanda, Uganda, UK, USA, the Netherlands, Cambodia, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Indonesia, Portugal and Spain.

Education & awareness

  • 2017-2018: Making an inventory and setting up curricula on labour exploitation for several educational levels (MBO, HBO, university, professional education).
  • 2017-present: Teaching of and setting up the modules for the two-weeks Summer School on conflict-related sexual violence and human trafficking at Tilburg University.
  • 2015-present: Teaching conflict-related sexual violence for high school pupils (e.g. Beatrix College Tilburg).
  • 2008-present: Giving lectures to a variety of audiences, organising events, and setting up photo-exhibitions to raise awareness on conflict-related sexual violence (via the Mukomeze Foundation).
  • 2001-present: Teaching and setting up semester courses on international criminal (procedural) law, international law, international human rights law, European law, transitional justice, victims in national and international proceedings, Dutch criminal and procedural law, conflict-related sexual violence and human trafficking at Tilburg University and other universities in the Netherlands (e.g. University of Groningen, Utrecht University) as well as abroad (e.g. in Portugal, Ireland). For BA and MA students from different backgrounds (e.g. law, psychology, victimology, criminology, anthropology).

Empowerment & advocacy

  • 2017-2018: Realising second, updated edition of the book ‘The Men Who Killed Me: Rwandan Survivors of Sexual Violence’ including educational materials on CRSV.
  • 2009: Editing the book “The Men Who Killed Me: Rwandan Survivors of Sexual Violence (Douglas & McIntyre, 2009 (English); Wolf Legal Publishers (Dutch))” with testimonials and photos of 17 survivors of conflict-related sexual violence.
  • 2008-present: Implementing projects which support and empower genocidal surivors of sexual violence in Rwanda (via the Mukomeze Foundation).
